Elseworlds
Elseworlds var under åren 1991-2010 DC Comics beteckning för serier (främst serieromaner och miniserier) som baseras på figurer från DC:s universum, men som likväl ligger utanför den ordinarie kontinuiteten.
Elseworlds-märkningen infördes 1991, då serieromanen "Batman: Gotham by Gaslight" från 1989 retroaktivt förklarades vara den första i utgivningen. Senare nyutgåvor av "Gotham by Gaslight", i vilket en 1800-tals-version av Batman kämpar mot Jack the Ripper, har följdaktligen försetts med "Elseworlds"-märkning.
2004 lades utgivningen på is, men återuppstod temporärt sex år senare för en sista utgivning, miniserien "Superman: Last Family of Krypton", vilken utforskar idén att Supermans biologiska föräldrar anlände till jorden tillsammans med sin son. På nyutgåvor tryckta efter 2010 finns ingen Elsworlds-stämpel.
Upplägget för respektive Elseworlds-serie skiljer sig åt – det kan handla om att förlägga hjältar och koncept till andra tider eller platser, om potentiella framtidsskildringar, om alternativa händelseförlopp, eller om att flytta figurerna till fantasy- eller scifi-miljöer.
Fram till 1986 hade DC använt beteckningen Imaginary Stories för liknande berättelser, vilka dock uteslutande publicerades i förlagets reguljära utgivning. Marvels motsvarighet är känd som "What if".
Utgivning
Utöver dessa miniserier och serieromaner har Elseworlds-serier i viss utsträckning även publicerats i reguljära titlar; flertalet av 1994 års annuals var Elsewords-märkta, liksom serietidningen The Batman Chronicles ##11 och #21.
2016 inleddes en ännu (2019) pågående utgivning som samlar Elseworlds-serierna i samlingsalbum
